For sale via e-Bay:
This auction is for an unrestored 1958 Corvette.
About five years ago I re-assembled this car for a friend and customer, Cooper Yates of Pensacola, Florida. This was the first car he ever owned. He bought it used during the sixties. Earlier this year Cooper died unexpectedly. His daughter Shelley inherited his Corvette but doesn't want to keep it. I agreed to sell it for her on eBay.
By 1998 this '58 had been partially disassembled but was still rolling. Cooper hired me to get it back in reliable condition. He did not want it to be fully restored. After I returned the car to him he put about 20,000 city miles on his '58. The odometer works and now shows 06,000. I assume this is actually 106,000 miles. This car is still very dependable. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it on a cross-country trip tomorrow.
The exterior color is a stock '58 Corvette shade called Signet red. I know it looks almost orange-red in the photos, but that's just the way my digital camera sees it. To the human eye it is the correct salmon-red. The coves and soft top are white. All body panels appear to be originals to this car except the hood. Cooper installed a poorly fitting reproduction hood when his original hood was stolen long ago. Collision cracks in the body panels have been repaired below the grill and above the front wheels. The lacquer(?) paint job is about 20 years old. It is still shiny, but up close you can see moisture bubbles, scratches, and chips in just about every panel. None of the chrome has ever been re-plated. Some chrome trim pieces, such as the trunk spears, have scratches and pits. It is interesting to me that this "Pilot Line" '58 never had the long metal reinforcing ribs running underneath each front fender like the assembly-line '58 Corvettes.
The original frame is in very good condition with no rust damage. The rear springs, rebound straps, brake hoses/shoes, battery, fuel pump, water pump, radiator hoses, ignition system, main wiring harnesses, exhaust system, u-joints, and clutch were replaced within the last few years.
The stock reproduction interior is red. The driver's seat cover has some small cracks in the bottom vinyl. The pebble grain dash is very good. The Daytona weave carpet is worn out. The gray seat belt webbing has some stains. The driver's door window crank mechanism works stiffly. Originally this car had a power top, but that mechanism is long gone. The gauges, wiper motor, door locks, lights, turn signals, radio, horn, and cowl vent all work. The original hard top is currently disassembled, and its headliner has been dyed black. The cigarette lighter is missing. All of the window glass is good. There is a wide whitewall spare tire in the trunk well. The jack is a replacement.
The engine is a 327/275hp small block from a late sixties Chevrolet. Cooper and some friends installed this engine in the seventies. It starts easy and it runs smooth, strong, quiet, and cool. It doesn't smoke. Cooper never rebuilt it, so I'm guessing it drips/burns about a quart of oil every 400 - 700 miles. In 1999 I installed a vintage Edelbrock aluminum C3B intake manifold with a Holley carb and a '66 open element air cleaner. The transmission is an excellent, late sixties Muncie 4-speed with an old Hurst curved shifter. I'm sorry, but I don't know what happened to the original 283 engine block.
There are some other modifications on this car too. The tach is a Sun electric model, the hubcaps are from a '63 Corvette, and the radio is a modern AM/FM/Cassette. There's no front license bumperette assembly. That's just the way Cooper wanted it to be.
Please note that this car is missing its original VIN tag. The Florida paint shop lost it back in the eighties. I've checked the frame stamping (with a mirror) and the clear Florida title and they do match. I guarantee this really is, and always has been, 1958 Corvette VIN J58S100018. I made Cooper aware that accurate reproduction VIN tags are available, but he didn't care to buy one for his car. |
