According to factory records, this rare and beautiful 1955 Corvette (s/n VE55S001672) was completed at Chevrolets St. Louis Plant in late November 1955. Having been assembled at the end of the production run, and being among the last 28 Corvettes built in 1955, the car was delivered with the rarest option of all - a factory 3-speed manual transmission. It is believed that fewer than 40 factory 3-speeds exist today.
Although the original example had just 49,322 original miles on it, Chris planned to drive it in the 2008 Muscle Car 1000. Facing the prospect of driving in a 1000 mile rally, he wanted to be sure the car performed flawlessly. As a result, he brought the Roadster to J & D Corvettes, the Corvette specialist in Downey, CA. Fifteen months and over $30,000 later, the car was ready to go.
In addition to rebuilding the engine and transmission, J & D Corvettes overhauled the suspension and brakes, renewed the electrical system, and tended to a variety of other needs. While the work was being performed, he located an original Plasticon hardtop and had it restored for the car.
The Roadster performed flawlessly on the rally covering almost 1,800 miles in just 7 days. After the rally, he brought the car back to J & D Corvettes for NCRS detailing. After eleven months and another $25,000, the car was in Concours condition.
This is an outstanding original example of one of the rarest Corvettes in existence. The car is complete and correct from its numbers-matching engine and drive line, to its original jack, Plexiglas side curtains and signal seeking radio. It is registered in New York, and comes with over $50,000 in recent receipts, along with photo documentation of the restoration work.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the discriminating collector looking for a documented, numbers matching no stories 1955 Corvette with a factory 3-speed. Its performance and reliability have been confirmed on the Muscle Car 1000, and the quality of its restoration will be rewarded in Concours competition. |
