| Car history: |
1957 Chevrolet Corvette Resto-Mod roadster – professionally built to the highest standards and quality with no regard for cost. This car started as an original, un-wrecked, genuine Chevrolet 1957 Corvette roadster with just 68,000 miles at the time of the beginning of the project, and its been driven just a few hundred miles since. First, a completely new frame was built to hold the stock 1957 body, but one that was much stronger than stock and one that would ride on the newer Corvette “C4” style independent suspension. All the suspension parts are new or rebuilt to new standards, but each part was first polished to a mirror finish and then powder coated silver to retain the polished look, and the frame is powder-coated. The suspension is complete as originally designed by GM for the “C4” series Corvette with power rack and pinion steering and retains all the correct geometry for proper handling. A brand new “C5” series ZO6 (405HP) engine, new T56, 6-speed transmission and a new Corvette differential were then installed. The exhaust system is built completely of polished stainless steel. The dual 3” exhaust pipes have a small stock sized take-off that allows some exhaust to come out the stock location in the bumper while the balance outlets behind the rear tires. Upgraded brakes with drilled and slotted bigger rotors, later-style Corvette wheels and tires finish off the chassis. This package provides a brand new, very strong good handling chassis, yet is built with all Corvette parts to retain the “Corvette” image of the car. The rear fenders where widened 1-inch, allowing the use of wide 275/40 x17” tires to fit properly. The door handles were replaced with flush units from a “C5” Corvette. The front and rear round Corvette emblems were recessed (“frenched”) into the body to look like today’s cars instead of that glued-on look. The original front turn signals were removed and replaced with custom-built turn signal lights built into the stock front fender scoops. The front grill was recessed some so that the “teeth” are no so prominent. The 1957 rear taillights were replaced with units from a 1958 Corvette because they follow the rear lines of the car better. All body gaps were perfected, and the hood was re-curved to fit properly. The body was treated to a show quality surface finish and then painted a special-order Mercedes-Benz Tech-tite metallic gray with clear coat. All of the glass is new and tinted, and all of the trim and brightwork is either new, re-chromed or polished. A brand new custom-made stainless steel gas tank was installed and the complete car was plumbed and wired. The interior concept was to retain the look and feel of an original 1957 Corvette, yet be upgraded to the comfort and convenience of today’s Corvette - down to the heated seats. The stock 1957 gauges were rebuilt and then “black” chromed so while they are originals, they have a very modern look. The steering column was shortened and a custom smaller diameter steering wheel was made to allow easier entry and exit from the car. The seats are custom and they provide better comfort and a lower seating position. The complete interior is covered in gray leather and is treated to the stock Corvette “waffle” pattern to appear just as the original design. An AM/FM/CD player with remote control is under the dash to provide the full functions, but out of sight. Likewise the AC/Heat unit is also hidden under the dash with no noticeable ducts or vents. The steering is precise and quick, the brakes are amazing, the clutch is easy and the car has been geared lower than a modern Corvette which allows for very easy driving and the use of all 6 speeds without driving over the speed limit. The driving experience of this car is spectacular – a thrilling blend of the old and new. Building another car of this caliber could easily cost well over $250K – and this is your opportunity to own a high-level Resto-Mod Corvette for far less than construction cost.
