| Car history: |
The car has been dissassembled into a "basket case" since 1985. I bought it in 1997 from the 2nd owner who had taken it apart for a complete restoration.
The car spent the first 25 years of it's life in Iran and Iraq, and middle-east. It was shipped there when new, and shipped back to Chicago when he got out of the service in 1983. The original owner worked for a military contractor and built airport and airbase runways throughout the middle-east. After retiring in 1983 and returning to the Chicago area, he suffered a major heart attack and died in 1985. The 2nd owner purchased the car from his widow in 1985. I have started the rebuild process on all the mechanical components, and am just getting a good start on the body. I have found several things on, and in the car that confirm that it spent several years in the middle east. Service records in Iranian (Farsi) and some Iranian coins and a key found in the rocker panels bring it all together. Also found some Farsi writing stamped inside the speedo cluster from repairs made way back in 1970. The picture with the yellow stickers is a translation that I put on the original housing to explain what it means. Had to make new aluminum inner rockers due to extensive damage to the originals. I think the body had been dropped at some point in this cars history while it was in pieces. What a mess.
Full restoration is documented in the Weblog - Ayattolah's Revenge. Follow along as we try to bring this basket case back to life. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ UPDATE- Car achieved Top Flight status at Dayton, Ohio in June 2008. First time out, much to my relief.
Car Topflighted second time at the Indiana Chapter meet in August 2008. 98.8%
TopFlighted again at the Charlotte Regional May 09'
TopFlight at Charlotte Nationals July 2010. Best score yet.
Car was sold to ProTeam at Auburn Sept 2010. Has since moved on to another owner. |
