Car history:
In 1973, I owned a 1955 Corvette. There was a gas station in our area I used to frequent. As I stopped there one day to buy gas, the owner asked me if I would be interested in a Corvette he had just gotten. I went with him to look at it. It was a 1959. But it was ROUGH! It was only 14 years old but it must have led a rough life to that point. But it did have a trunk full of new and NOS GM parts for the car in the old yellow and black boxes. While looking at it, I checked the VIN number like I always do just to see what it was. And it was a low number.............car 445. I always remembered that number because it was so low. But I passed on buying the car due to its condition. And I never knew what happened to it.
But the years passed and around 2001, nearly 30 years later, I was helping a guy take some of his cars to a cruise they hold in our town each year. He usually had a new car each year that he had just had restored. Some were Corvettes, some were other Chevrolet products but they were always Chevrolets.
This particular year, the new car he had just added was a 1959 Corvette. It was Tuxedo Black with silver coves and red interior. It had the solid-lifter 270 HP 2x4 283 with a 4-speed. It was absolutely beautiful. All new and just finished. I loved it. I volunteered to drive this car to the cruise for him!
As I attempted to start the car, it did not fire. The owner said the car had sat for a while and it might not start unless he added some gas to the front carb. I waited in the car while he did that. I had the door open while waiting and just happened to look at the VIN plate which is located in the door jamb on 1959s.
And lo and behold!!!! This was 1959 Corvette number 445!!!!! I could not believe it. It had been almost 30 years since I had seen it and the last time it looked like it was ready to part out.
We finally got it started and it sounded great with that lumpy cam. I slipped it into 1st gear and eased it out of the building and drove it to the site of the cruise. I had a smile a mile wide mostly due to the fact that I had found what seemed like an old friend after all those years.
Once we got to the cruise, I told the current owner that I had a story to tell him that he was not going to believe!
